How to Start, Stop, Restart, Force Stop and Power Cycle a Virtual Machine in vCloud

Purpose

This document explains the procedures for starting, stopping, restarting, force stopping, and power cycling a Virtual Machine (VM), along with the differences between each operation.

1. How to Start a Virtual Machine

Procedure

  1. Log in to the vCloud portal:

    vcloud.officeinfra.com:4085

  2. Navigate to:

    Virtual Machines → Select Required VM

  3. Open the VM actions menu.

  4. Select:

    Start / Power On

  5. Wait for the VM status to change to:

    Running / Powered On

  6. The VM operating system will begin booting.

2. How to Stop a Virtual Machine

Procedure

  1. Log in to:

    vcloud.officeinfra.com:4085

  2. Navigate to:

    Virtual Machines → Select Required VM

  3. Select:

    Stop / Power Off

  4. Confirm the shutdown action.

  5. Wait until the VM status changes to:

    Stopped / Powered Off

Note: A normal stop operation performs a controlled shutdown of the VM depending on guest OS integration and configured settings.

3. How to Restart a Virtual Machine

Procedure

  1. Log in to:

    vcloud.officeinfra.com:4085

  2. Select the required VM.

  3. Open the VM actions menu.

  4. Select:

    Restart / Reboot

  5. Confirm the restart action.

  6. The VM will shut down and automatically start again.

4. How to Force Stop a Virtual Machine

Procedure

  1. Log in to:

    vcloud.officeinfra.com:4085

  2. Select the affected VM.

  3. Open the power actions menu.

  4. Select:

    Force Stop

  5. Confirm the action.

  6. The VM will immediately power off.

Note: Force Stop should only be used when the VM is unresponsive or a normal shutdown is not possible.

5. How to Power Cycle a Virtual Machine

Procedure

  1. Log in to:

    vcloud.officeinfra.com:4085

  2. Select the required VM.

  3. Open VM power actions.

  4. Select:

    Power Cycle

  5. Confirm the action.

  6. The VM will:

    • Power off

    • Reinitialize virtual hardware

    • Power on automatically

6. Difference Between Stop, Restart, Force Stop and Power Cycle
